Portrait Lighting Part 1

Fill light- Lighting used to light whats missing from other lights/lighting.
Main light- Also known as the key light, principal source of lighting.
Hair light- Light used to light up the hair of someone. Obvious yo.
Background light- A light source lit behind the person to createa a highlight separating the person and background.Shadowless lighting- Lighting pointed in all directions to creat a shadowless image can also be done in an editing room.Butterfly- Used in having the light above the face pointing towards the direction of the nose also called paramount lighting as it was prominent in hollywood during the 1930s. Called butterfly due to the shape the shadow makes under the nose.Loop- Most used way of lighting creates a loop shadow under the nose, creates a sense of depth and is done by placing light about head and angling it to the left or right of the face .Split- USed by having the light on one side of the face which lights one side and keeps the other side in shadow.Rembrandt lighting- Done like loop lighting altho placed higher and farther left or right of the face. Creates a triangle of light under the eye.Grey Card- Used for reflective lightingHard light vs Soft light- Hard light is like the sun its far far away and creates more harsh lighting soft light is like a light that is used real close to the subject.3:1- when the light discrepancy between two light sources is one and a half f stopsInverse square of law of light- Beam of light further gets less light targeted while close targets a more well lit.
5 tips
A. Pull poses and moods, use magazine ads and other sources as ideas, do your homework!
B. Follow the nose with your eyes.
C.Bounce the shoulders
D. Open the mouth realizes tension in cheekbones and face.
E. Get low and talk get low to capture the full model and you got to talk to direct the models to the shot you want.
